Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of working on an original mix tape with Dark Matter Coffee. The release pairs with their Datura Inoxia (Devil’s Trumpet) blend. Download, stream and order the limited addition cassette at charlesmantis.com.
Charles Mantis is featuring Steve Kortyka on Saxophone at Industry City Distillery in Brooklyn, NY March 11th at 8pm.
Last week on Friday September 14th the Chicago Beethoven Festival commissioned several producers and popular acts to write and perform music inspired by themes from Beethoven’s third symphony in a series called the Rocketelle Project. I was honored to perform my own music featuring myself on trumpet and electronics and saxophonist Anthony Bruno. A long list of acts performed including Brighton MA, Stranger Lazy and electronic producer Cos of Push Beats. The project was added to the festival in order to reach out to an audience that may not normally attend a festival featuring Beethoven’s music.
If you are in Chicago for the NATO summit or plainly would like to avoid it Charles Mantis will be playing Transistor Friday May 18th with Everypeople Workshop. Transistor is located at 3819 N Lincoln Ave in North Center. It’s just a short walk or cab ride from the Irving Park brown line stop. The venue/shop is located in a perfect neighborhood to grab dinner before and drinks after. A special thanks to Doug Abram of Black Bear Combo and Rat Snake Turbo Rat for all his work on this cat poster! RSVP HERE!
Be sure to check out Charles Mantis in Chicago Wednesday April 18th at Underground Wonder Bar.
Comprovisation is an audio form of collage. A collage can be presented in a way that expresses the creative process as an element of the finished product. Comprovisation is a polished form of the creative process combining the real-time spontaneity of improvisation with the accuracy of a second draft. In the audio form the composer might combine live recordings with older found sounds to create an entirely new piece. The composer allows the listener to hear the entire creative process in real-time.
“Puddle Jumper” is an edited live performance I played with TAL at Rodan in Chicago.
“Run” is a studio recording that includes first takes of improvised material by the saxophonist/composer Anthony Bruno. Elements from a live improvisation of the piece were later included in this recording.
