It was nice to see so many beautiful people on the dance floor last night at Untitled for the Warner Bros. Gatsby release party.
I’ll be playing trumpet in the Walkmen horn section this evening. I hope they kill it like they did at pitchfork a few years ago. They even bring their very own piano with them everywhere they travel.
I can’t wait to open for Antibalas tomorrow night at Lincoln Hall and finally hear the power of this big horn section live! They were just featured on Jimmy Fallon last week to advertise the start of their tour. Many of the songs feature Baritone, Tenor and two trumpets. I also hear the lead singer designs some of his own clothing.
It’s nice to witness such a positive display of unity amongst original bands in the Chicago area for a good cause. Last night a handful of groups pulled together to benefit students for a free Tibet in memory of it’s director and member of the Beastie Boys, Adam “MCA” Yauch. Each group took on the task of performing covers of classic music recorded by the iconic group. I was honored to have the opportunity to sit in on trumpet with the Low Down Brass Band on a couple of songs including “Brass Monkey”. All the bands pulled together for a very memorable and epic encore.
In the next few weeks Ralph “Soul” Jackson will be promoting the release of his LP on Rabbit Factory. The tour will visit Memphis, TN Thursday 6/14, Muscle Shoals, AL 6/15, Birmingham, AL 6/16, Phenix City, AL 6/17 and Chicago, IL Saturday 6/23 at Martyrs’. The live band will include the authentic horn section from the record featuring Anthony Abbinanti on bari sax, Tom Riley on tenor sax, Andrew Zelm on trombone and myself on trumpet. Buy tickets here! RSVP!
I don’t think anyone who checked out Zooey Deschanel’s band She and Him at Millennium Park in Chicago a few summers back would forget the killer girl band that opened up the show. I’ve been lucky to run into the members of Hollows a few more times since then both playing with JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound at the Metro and performing alongside Bassist and Flutist Emma Hospelhorn in the horn section for Stephen Paul Smoker. The first song to surface of their upcoming release is called “V is for Vulture” and it features myself and trombonist Andrew Zelm. To hear more about the release check out this interview in the Brooklyn Vegan.
Hollows: V is for Vulture
For close to a year and a half DJ Roma Soul and Black Bear Combo have played to a packed house downstairs at Subterranean on the third Friday of the month in Chicago. This has grown to be one of the more successful nights I’ve seen featuring an instrumental act since I moved to Chicago nearly 7 years ago. The crowd demands high energy. I look forward to it every month and I hope that you will join us this Friday February 17th 2012. More about the night in the Chicago Tribune.
