Comprovisation is an audio form of collage. A collage can be presented in a way that expresses the creative process as an element of the finished product. Comprovisation is a polished form of the creative process combining the real-time spontaneity of improvisation with the accuracy of a second draft. In the audio form the composer might combine live recordings with older found sounds to create an entirely new piece. The composer allows the listener to hear the entire creative process in real-time.
“Puddle Jumper” is an edited live performance I played with TAL at Rodan in Chicago.
“Run” is a studio recording that includes first takes of improvised material by the saxophonist/composer Anthony Bruno. Elements from a live improvisation of the piece were later included in this recording.
The Akai APC40 is a midi controller instrument that controls audio clips, effects and virtual instruments in a live setting. The grid design of the instrument provides an angle to writing music that is very different from composing and performing on a traditional piano. The buttons illuminate when they are actively playing an audio clip creating a choreographed light show to the music.
I recently opened a Sound Cloud account. You can check out my newest songs here. My latest composition project is in collaboration with visual artist Rajeev Basu involving electronic works made entirely of alarm sounds called eep eep eep. It’s a great challenge to make something beautiful out of sounds that are intended to warn humans of danger. You can hear an abbreviated version of what I came up with below.
